Compress a video for WhatsApp

Get a video small enough for WhatsApp to send as a video message, and choose its quality yourself instead of letting the app squeeze it.

Your file stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress a video

  1. Choose a video (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or AVI).
  2. Pick a target size, or type your own number of MB.
  3. Press "Compress video". When it is done, watch the preview and download the MP4.

WhatsApp's limits

WhatsApp sends videos up to 100 MB (720p) on a fast connection and 64 MB (480p) on a slower one, and compresses them on the way. We aim for 60 MB so it fits either way; for a status or a quick send, pick 16 MB.

To send the original file without WhatsApp's compression, attach it as a Document instead: documents can be up to 2 GB.

How we hit the size

File size is bitrate × length. We divide your target by the video’s length to get a bitrate budget, keep a small part for audio, and then pick the highest resolution that still looks good at that bitrate. A short clip can stay in 1080p; a long one may come out in 720p or 480p.

Some hardware encoders don’t land exactly on the bitrate they are given. When the result is over your target, or far under it, we encode again with a corrected bitrate, so the file ends up just under the size you asked for.

Your videos stay on your device

Nothing is uploaded. Compression runs in your browser, using your device’s built-in video encoder, so there is no upload wait, no queue and no copy of your video on a server.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about how this tool works on your device.

Why does WhatsApp say my video is too long?

Your video is over the size WhatsApp sends as a video on your connection (64 or 100 MB). Compress it to 60 MB here, or 16 MB to be sure, then send it again.

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account.

Is there a watermark?

No. We never add a watermark.

What format do I get?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It plays almost everywhere: phones, computers, chat apps and social sites.

How big can my video be?

Up to 2 GB on desktop Chrome and Edge, 1 GB on desktop Safari and 500 MB on phones. Everything happens in your browser’s memory, so very large files need a computer.

Why did my video get a lower resolution?

A small target for a long video leaves few bits per frame. A lower resolution at that bitrate looks sharper than a blocky full-resolution picture, so we step down when needed.
