Transcribe an interview

Turn an interview recording into text with a time on every line, so every quote can be checked against the sound. Nothing leaves your device, which matters for sources.

Your file stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to turn an interview recording into text

  1. Choose your an interview recording.
  2. Pick the language, or leave it on Detect automatically.
  3. Press "Transcribe". Fix any word, then copy the text or save it as TXT, SRT or VTT.

Checking quotes

Click the time next to any line to hear exactly that part, then fix the words in the page. Do this for every quote you publish: names, numbers and words that sound alike are where a speech model slips.

Your interviewee's words are never uploaded to a transcription service. That keeps an off-the-record recording on your own device.

What you get

  • The text, split where the speaker pauses. Fix any word right in the page.
  • Times for every line. Click a time to hear that part again.
  • Copy it, or save it as a text file (TXT) or as subtitles (SRT or VTT) for a video player or YouTube.
  • Translate to English: speech in another language comes out as English text.

How fast and how accurate

The first time, your browser downloads the speech model (145 MB). It is kept for next time, so later recordings start at once.

In our test, a 96-second lecture took about 5 seconds on a Mac laptop in a Chrome-based browser, using the graphics chip. Without one, the same laptop took about 32 seconds. Phones are slower. You see the text appear while it works.

Clear speech in English gives the fewest mistakes. Other languages work too, with more mistakes; names and rare words are the usual errors, so read it through before you share it.

Your files stay on your device

Nothing is uploaded. The speech model runs in your browser, so your recording is never sent anywhere to be transcribed. Lectures, meetings, interviews and voice notes stay private.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about how this tool works on your device.

Does it show who is speaking?

No. It writes what is said and starts a new line where the speaker pauses, but it does not tell voices apart. Add names while you edit the lines; a quick read with the recording playing is usually enough.

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account. Each recording can be up to 60 minutes long, and there is no daily count.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Which languages does it understand?

It uses OpenAI's Whisper speech model, which knows about 100 languages. Pick yours from the list, or let it detect the language. English is the most accurate.

How long can a recording be?

Up to 60 minutes per file on the free plan, and you can turn as many files into text as you need: we don't count them. For a longer recording, cut it into parts with Audio Cutter. More with Premium is coming soon.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome. Newer phones use their graphics chip and are much faster; on older ones it still works, just slower. Keep the page open while it runs.
