How to make a GIF from a video
- Choose your video.
- Play it, pause where the GIF should start and press "Use current time" under Start; do the same for the end. Up to 30 seconds.
- Pick the width and smoothness, press "Make GIF", then download it.
Keeping a GIF small
A GIF stores every frame as a picture with up to 256 colors, so it grows fast: a 5-second clip at 480 pixels and 15 frames per second is usually 1 to 4 MB, while 30 seconds at 800 pixels can pass 30 MB. Shorter clips, a smaller width and 10 frames per second give the lightest files.
We make one color palette for your clip, so colors stay close to the video, and dither with a fine pattern that compresses well. GIFs have no sound.
| Use | Width | Smoothness |
|---|---|---|
| Chat, reactions | 320 px | 10 fps |
| Docs, bug reports, slides | 480–640 px | 15 fps |
| Product demos, websites | 640–800 px | 15–20 fps |
Your videos stay on your device
Nothing is uploaded. The GIF is made in your browser, so screen recordings of private work stay private.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Short answers about how this tool works on your device.
Can I turn a GIF back into an MP4?
Yes, with GIF to MP4: the MP4 is usually a fraction of the size and plays everywhere.
Why is a GIF so much bigger than the video?
Video formats store only what changes between frames and use millions of colors efficiently; GIF is from 1987 and stores each frame with 256 colors. Where an app accepts MP4, a short MP4 looks better and is smaller.
Are my videos uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your videos stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
Is Snipmill free?
Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account.
Is there a watermark?
No. We never add a watermark.
