Frequently asked questions

Every question we answer on Snipmill, in one place: first the ones about the whole site, then each tool and page with its own. Each heading links to its page.

About Snipmill

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account.

Do I need an account?

No. Open a tool and use it.

Compress Video

Is there a watermark?

No. There is no watermark on your videos.

What format do I get?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. It plays almost everywhere: phones, computers, chat apps and social sites.

How big can my video be?

Up to 2 GB on desktop Chrome and Edge, 1 GB on desktop Safari and 500 MB on phones. Everything happens in your browser’s memory, so very large files need a computer.

Why did my video get a lower resolution?

A small target for a long video leaves few bits per frame. A lower resolution at that bitrate looks sharper than a blocky full-resolution picture, so we step down when needed.

Compress to 10 MB

Why is my 10 MB video so blurry?

10 MB holds about 80 megabits. Spread over five minutes that is too little for a sharp picture at any frame size. Cut the video to the part that matters and compress it again, or send a bigger size if the place allows it.

Can I get a 4K video under 10 MB?

Only a few seconds of it. A 4K clip at 10 MB comes out much smaller than 4K, because the planner steps down to a frame size the budget can fill.

Compress to 25 MB

Why did Gmail still turn my 25 MB video into a Drive link?

The limit counts the whole message, and mail encoding makes files about a third bigger. Compress to 18 or 20 MB and the video goes as a normal attachment.

Is 25 MB enough for a 10-minute video?

It works, but at 240p it looks blurry. For ten minutes, use 50 MB or more, or share a cloud link instead of attaching the file.

Compress to 50 MB

My video is already 60 MB. Will 50 MB look worse?

Hardly. Going from 60 to 50 MB lowers the bitrate by a sixth, and the planner keeps the frame size when it can. The result is re-encoded once, so it isn't identical, but side by side it is very hard to tell apart.

How long a video fits in 50 MB?

About ten minutes at 480p, or two minutes at full 1080p. Longer videos still compress, at a smaller frame size.

Compress for WhatsApp

Why does WhatsApp say my video is too long?

Your video is over the size WhatsApp sends as a video on your connection (64 or 100 MB). Compress it to 60 MB here, or 16 MB to be sure, then send it again.

Will WhatsApp shrink my video again?

Yes, WhatsApp re-compresses every video it sends as a video. Starting from a clean 60 MB file gives it less to throw away than a huge original, so the person you send it to sees a sharper picture.

Compress for Discord

My clip is long. Will it still look good at 19 MB?

A minute or two looks fine. For longer clips we lower the resolution so the picture stays clean; trim it to the part you want to show first, and it stays sharper.

Can I compress a game recording?

Yes. Recordings saved as MKV or MP4, from a game recorder or a screen recorder, both work, and you get an MP4 with H.264 video. A long recording at 19 MB loses detail, so cut it to the moment you want to show first.

Compress for Email

Can I email a longer video?

At 20 MB, a few minutes still look good. For longer videos, trim them first or send a link to a shared folder instead.

Will the person I send it to be able to play it?

Yes. The file is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which opens on phones, Windows, Mac and in the mail app's own preview.

Trim Video

Does trimming lower the quality?

In most browsers, no: the part you keep is copied without re-encoding, and only the frames right at the cut points are encoded again. Browsers without a built-in video encoder re-encode the clip at high quality.

Can I trim an iPhone video (MOV, HEVC)?

Yes. iPhone videos work, and you get an MP4 back.

How long can my video be?

Length doesn’t matter, file size does: up to 2 GB on desktop Chrome and Edge, 1 GB on desktop Safari and 500 MB on phones.

Convert to MP4

"Plays everywhere" or "Fastest": which one should I pick?

"Plays everywhere" re-encodes the video to H.264, which phones, computers and TVs play. "Fastest" keeps the original video when the MP4 format allows it, so it takes seconds and the quality is unchanged, but HEVC video may not play on older Windows PCs.

How big can my file be?

Up to 2 GB on desktop Chrome and Edge, 1 GB on desktop Safari and 500 MB on phones.

MOV to MP4

Can I convert iPhone videos?

Yes. iPhone MOV files (H.264 or HEVC) convert to MP4. With "Fastest", the video is copied as it is and the conversion takes about a second.

Is a MOV renamed to .mp4 the same thing?

Sometimes it plays, often it doesn't: renaming changes the name, not the format inside. Converting writes a real MP4, and with "Plays everywhere" the video inside is H.264 too.

WebM to MP4

Why does WebM need re-encoding?

WebM usually holds VP8 or VP9 video, which MP4 players rarely support. We re-encode it to H.264 so it plays everywhere.

Why is my MP4 bigger than the WebM?

VP9 packs a picture into fewer bytes than H.264, so the same quality needs a higher bitrate in an MP4. If size matters, run the MP4 through Compress Video afterwards.

MKV to MP4

Will my MKV keep its quality?

If the MKV holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound, "Fastest" copies it into the MP4 untouched. Other codecs are re-encoded to H.264 at a similar bitrate.

My recording is bigger than 2 GB. What can I do?

Files up to 2 GB on desktop Chrome and Edge work here. For longer sessions, OBS Studio can turn its own MKV recordings into MP4 when you stop recording: Settings → Advanced → Recording → "Automatically remux to mp4".

AVI to MP4

Why does AVI take longer?

Browsers have no built-in support for AVI, so we use a slower converter that works everywhere. A few minutes for a long video is normal; keep the tab open.

My old camera video is sideways. Can I fix it?

Yes. Convert it to MP4 first, then turn it the right way with Rotate Video. Turning an MP4 is instant and doesn't touch its quality.

GIF to MP4

Does the MP4 loop like the GIF?

The MP4 plays once, like other videos; most apps and sites can loop it, and Instagram and TikTok loop short videos on their own. Colors usually look better than in the GIF, which only has 256.

Can I make a GIF from a video instead?

Yes, with Video to GIF: pick up to 30 seconds of the video, the width and how smooth it plays.

Video to MP3

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome. Files up to 500 MB work on phones; on a computer you can use files up to 1 or 2 GB.

Can I download music from YouTube with this?

No. It converts files that are already on your device, like videos you recorded or were sent.

MP4 to MP3

Does the MP3 lose quality?

MP3 is a compressed format, so it is re-encoded. At 192 kbps or 320 kbps the difference is very hard to hear.

Can I keep only part of the song?

Convert the whole MP4 here, then open the MP3 in Audio Cutter to keep the part you want, with a fade at the start and end.

MOV to MP3

Can I convert iPhone videos?

Yes. Choose the MOV from your Photos or Files app and you get an MP3 back.

Where does the MP3 go on my iPhone?

Safari asks whether to download it; it then lands in Files → Downloads. From there you can share it or open it in another app.

M4A to MP3

Can I convert iPhone voice memos?

Yes. Voice memos are M4A files. Share or save one to Files, then choose it here. 128 kbps is plenty for speech.

How big will the MP3 be?

It depends only on the quality you pick and the length: about 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps and 2.4 MB per minute at 320 kbps. A 10-minute voice memo at 128 kbps is about 10 MB.

Audio to Text

Which files can I use?

MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC and other recordings, and videos (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV). For a video, only the sound is used.

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account. Each recording can be up to 60 minutes long. There is no daily limit.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device. They aren't uploaded.

Which languages does it understand?

It uses OpenAI's Whisper speech model, which knows about 100 languages. Pick yours from the list, or let it detect the language. English is the most accurate.

How long can a recording be?

Up to 60 minutes per file on the free plan. There is no daily limit. For a longer recording, cut it into parts with Audio Cutter.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari and Chrome. Newer phones use their graphics chip and are much faster; on older ones it still works, just slower. Keep the page open while it runs.

Video to Text

Can I make subtitles for my video?

Yes. Save the result as SRT or VTT. YouTube, VLC and most video editors can load these files next to the video.

MP3 to Text

Does it work for songs?

It is made for speech. Sung lyrics over music are often misheard, so expect more mistakes there.

Can I turn an MP3 in another language into English?

Yes. Pick Translate to English: speech in another language comes out as English text, with the same times.

Voice Memo to Text

How do I find my iPhone voice memo?

In the Voice Memos app, tap the memo, tap "…", choose Share, then "Save to Files". Then choose it here from Files.

Does the phone need a connection?

Only the first time, to download the speech model (145 MB, Wi-Fi is better). After that it is kept on the phone, and memos turn into text without sending anything anywhere.

Lecture to Text

How long a lecture can I transcribe?

Up to 60 minutes per file on the free plan. For a 90-minute class, cut it into two parts with Audio Cutter and turn each into text; the times start again at 0 in the second part. On a phone, close other apps first.

Can I record the lecture here too?

Yes, with Voice Recorder: it records in the browser, and the finished recording goes straight on to Audio to Text. Ask the lecturer first; many classes have rules about recording.

Interview to Text

Does it show who is speaking?

No. It writes what is said and starts a new line where the speaker pauses, but it does not tell voices apart. Add names while you edit the lines; a quick read with the recording playing is usually enough.

Is a transcript made here safe to use for a confidential source?

The recording and the text stay in your browser on your device. They aren't uploaded. Keep the saved files somewhere as safe as the recording itself.

Meeting to Text

Which meeting recordings work?

Recordings saved by Zoom (MP4 or M4A), Microsoft Teams and Google Meet (MP4), and any phone recording. For a video only the sound is used.

Our meeting was 90 minutes. What now?

Each file can be up to 60 minutes on the free plan. Cut the recording into two parts with Audio Cutter and turn each one into text.

Podcast to Text

Can I use the transcript on my podcast website?

Yes. The text is yours. Read it through first: names of guests and products are the most common mistakes. A transcript on the episode page also helps people find it in search.

Can I make the episode louder before I publish it?

Yes. Normalize Audio sets an episode to −16 LUFS, a common podcast level, so it sounds as loud as the shows around it.

Add Subtitles

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account. Videos can be up to 10 minutes long: plenty for Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

Which languages work?

The speech model knows about 100 languages; English is the most accurate. You can also turn speech in another language into English captions. On some browsers, captions in scripts other than Latin can only be saved as SRT or VTT.

Can I use subtitles I already have?

Yes. After choosing the video, press "or use my SRT/VTT file" and pick your subtitle file. Its lines appear next to the video, ready to style; the speech model is not needed.

How long does it take?

Turning speech into text is usually faster than the video plays, on a computer with a graphics chip. Making the video takes about as long as other video tools here: a few seconds per minute of video on a recent computer, longer on a phone.

Captions for Reels

Why burn the captions in?

Many people watch short videos with the sound off. Captions in the picture show on every app, and you don't have to type them again in each one.

My video is already vertical. Does it get cropped?

No. A video that is already 9:16 keeps its frame; only a wide or square video is cut to 9:16 from the middle. Choose "Keep frame" if you want a wide video to stay wide.

Auto Subtitle Generator

Can I upload the subtitles to YouTube?

Yes. Save them as SRT, then in YouTube Studio add subtitles to your video and upload the file.

Resize Video

Can I choose which part stays when cropping?

Not yet: the crop keeps the middle of the picture. If your subject is at the side, choose "Show everything" so nothing is cut off.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your videos stay on your device. They aren't uploaded.

Resize for TikTok

Why does TikTok put black bars on my video?

A wide 16:9 video doesn't fill a phone held upright, so the app adds bars. Cropping it to 9:16 here first makes it fill the screen.

Does the same file work for Reels and Shorts?

Yes. Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts use the same 9:16 shape, so one 1080 × 1920 MP4 fits all three.

Resize for Instagram

Should I use 4:5 or 9:16 on Instagram?

4:5 for a post in the feed, 9:16 for a Reel or a story. The feed shows posts up to 4:5, so a taller video gets cut in the feed preview.

Why does Instagram crop my video when I post it?

The app trims anything taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1 to fit the feed. Resizing to 4:5 here first means you choose what stays, instead of the app.

Make Video Square

Will a square video look right on every app?

Yes. Square videos show without bars in feeds on Instagram, Facebook and X, and on phones held either way.

Can I put a colored background instead of black bars?

Not yet: "Show everything" uses black bars. They look neat on dark themes, and the picture inside keeps its full size.

Rotate Video

Why does a video play sideways in one app and fine in another?

Phones save which way is up as a note in the file. Current players on phones, Windows, macOS and in browsers follow it; a few old players don't. If a video plays sideways everywhere, the note is wrong: rotate it here to fix it.

Flip Video

How do I flip a video upside down?

Choose 180° and "Mirror left-right": together they flip the picture top to bottom.

Mute Video

Can I keep the sound and remove the video instead?

Yes, with Video to MP3: it saves only the sound as an MP3.

Remove Audio

Can I remove only the background noise and keep the voices?

Not with this tool: it removes all sound. To keep the words, save the sound with Video to MP3 and clean it up in a sound editor.

Change Video Speed

Speed Up Video

Can I make a time-lapse from a normal video?

Yes, up to 4× here. For a stronger time-lapse, run the result through again: 4× twice is 16×.

Can I speed up only one part?

The whole video changes speed. To speed up one part, cut it out with Trim Video first, speed it up, then put the pieces back together with Merge Videos.

Slow Motion Video

Why does my slowed-down video look choppy?

A normal phone video has 30 frames per second; at 0.25× you see about 7 per second. Film in your phone's slow-motion mode (120 or 240 fps) for smooth results.

My iPhone Slo-mo clip plays at normal speed on my computer. Why?

Copied straight off the phone, a Slo-mo clip is stored at its full frame rate, and Apple's Photos app does the slowing down when it plays it. Slow the file down here, 0.25× for a 120 fps clip, and it plays slowly in every player.

Video to GIF

Why is a GIF so much bigger than the video?

Video formats store only what changes between frames and use millions of colors efficiently; GIF is from 1987 and stores each frame with 256 colors. Where an app accepts MP4, a short MP4 looks better and is smaller.

MP4 to GIF

Can I turn a GIF back into an MP4?

Yes, with GIF to MP4: the MP4 is usually a fraction of the size and plays everywhere.

Video to JPG

Video to PNG

Can I make a YouTube thumbnail with this?

Yes. Save the frame as PNG, then add text in an image editor. YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 thumbnails, so a frame from a 720p or bigger video is large enough.

Remove Location from Video

Does it lower the quality?

No. The video and sound are copied exactly as they are; only the information around them is left out.

Doesn't my phone remove the location when I share?

Sometimes. On an iPhone the share sheet has "Options" at the top with a Location switch, and many messaging apps remove it. Files sent as documents, by email, through cloud folders or AirDrop often keep it. Removing it here makes sure.

Remove Video Metadata

Which metadata is removed?

All the descriptive metadata: location, camera make and model, creation date, encoder, title, comment, chapters. What a player needs to play the file (size, frame rate, codec) stays, because the file would not play without it.

Audio Cutter

Can I cut the sound out of a video?

Yes. Choose the video: you get the part you pick as a sound file. To keep the picture, use Trim Video instead.

MP3 Cutter

Does cutting an MP3 lower the quality?

It is encoded again at 192 kbps, which sounds the same as the original to almost everyone. Keep the original if you plan to cut it many times.

Audio Converter

Can I convert the sound of a video?

Yes. Choose the video and pick the format; you get only its sound. For MP3 there is also Video to MP3.

WAV to MP3

How much smaller will my WAV get?

About ten times smaller at 128–192 kbps: a 50 MB WAV becomes about 5 MB.

Should I keep the WAV?

Yes, if you might edit or master the sound again: every MP3 made from an MP3 loses a little more. Share the MP3 and keep the WAV as your original.

MP3 to WAV

Will the WAV sound better than the MP3?

No. The WAV holds exactly what the MP3 had, uncompressed, so editors can work with it. What the MP3 left out doesn't come back.

Can I burn the WAV to an audio CD?

Yes. Audio CDs use 16-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo, which is what an MP3 at 44.1 kHz turns into here, so burning software takes the file without converting it again.

FLAC to MP3

Which quality should I pick for FLAC to MP3?

320 kbps keeps the most of a lossless FLAC. 192 kbps is about a third smaller and still sounds the same to most people.

Can I convert a whole album at once?

Yes. Choose up to 10 tracks together; they all get the same quality, and "Download all (ZIP)" saves them in one go.

Volume Booster

Does it work for a video?

Yes. Choose the video: the picture is copied as it is and only the sound gets louder. You get an MP4.

Increase Video Volume

Why is my phone video so quiet?

Phone microphones are set low so loud places don't distort, and speech filmed from a distance ends up quiet. +10 dB or evening out the loudness usually fixes it.

Normalize Audio

What does −16 LUFS mean?

LUFS measures how loud something sounds over its whole length. −16 LUFS is a common target for podcasts and spoken word; music services play songs at about −14.

Should I normalize every episode the same way?

Yes. Running each episode or clip through the same −16 LUFS target makes them sound equally loud one after another, so listeners don't reach for the volume between them.

Remove Background Noise

Does it work on a video?

Yes. Choose the video: the picture is copied as it is and only the sound is cleaned. You get an MP4.

How is it different from online voice enhancers?

Many of them send your file to their servers and rebuild the voice with a large AI model. Here the cleanup runs on your device with classic noise reduction: more natural on light noise, less dramatic on very bad recordings, and your file isn't uploaded.

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account. Recordings and videos can be up to 30 minutes long, and up to 10 files at once.

Remove Noise from Video

Can it remove wind noise?

The low rumble of wind, yes, with Clearer voice on. Strong gusts that hit the microphone change too fast to be removed cleanly.

Enhance Voice Recording

What helps most for a bad recording?

Start with Light noise removal, Clearer voice and Even loudness, and listen to 10 seconds. Only try Strong if the noise is still loud: it removes more but can make voices thin.

Ringtone Maker

Can I make a ringtone from a song I bought?

Songs bought on iTunes since 2009 have no copy protection, so they work. Music saved from Apple Music or Spotify for offline listening is locked to those apps and can't be used.

iPhone Ringtone

Why 40 seconds?

Ringtones copied from a computer can be up to 40 seconds; longer M4R files may not show up in the list. GarageBand on the iPhone keeps at most 30 seconds, and offers to shorten a longer one.

Can I use it as a text tone or for one contact?

Yes. Once it is on the iPhone, it is in the list for text tones too, and in Contacts → Edit → Ringtone you can give one person their own sound. For a text tone, a few seconds is enough.

Merge Videos

How many clips can I merge?

Up to 10 at once on the free plan, as long as together they fit in your device's memory: about 2 GB on a computer, 500 MB on a phone.

Combine MP4 Files

Will combining lower the quality?

The clips are encoded again at about the same quality. For a lossless join the clips would need the exact same format and size, which phone clips rarely have.

Audio Joiner

Can I join files of different formats?

Yes. An MP3, a WAV and a voice memo can go in one list; they are brought to the same sound settings and saved in the format you pick.

Is Snipmill free?

Yes. Snipmill is free to use and needs no account. You can join up to 10 files at once.

Merge MP3

Does merging MP3s lower the quality?

The joined file is encoded again at 192 kbps, which sounds the same as the originals to almost everyone.

Add Music to Video

Can the music start in the middle of the video?

Yes. Drag the handle on the video's filmstrip, or type the time in "Music starts at". Before that moment the video keeps only its own sound. You can also stop the music before the end.

Can I use only part of a song?

Yes. Drag the handle on the song's waveform to where it should begin, and the other one to where it should end. With "Repeat" on, that part plays again until the music stops.

Will the video lose quality?

No. The picture is copied as it is (H.264 and HEVC videos); only the sound is made new. Other kinds of video are encoded to H.264.

Replace Audio in Video

Can I use a voice-over I recorded?

Yes. Record it with any voice recorder, choose it as the second file and set "Video's own sound" to 0% and "Music" to 100%. This page starts that way.

Voice Recorder

How long can I record?

As long as you like: the recording is kept in your browser's memory, about 1 MB per minute. Keep the page open and the phone awake while recording.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. It is recorded in your browser, so it stays on your device. It isn't uploaded.

Screen Recorder

Is there a time limit?

No. The video is kept in your browser's memory while you record, from a few MB to about 20 MB per minute, depending on what is on screen, so very long recordings need a computer with enough memory.
