Lossy and lossless
MP3, M4A and OGG are lossy: they leave out sounds people barely hear, so files are about a tenth of the size. WAV and FLAC are lossless: every sample is kept. Converting a lossy file to WAV or FLAC makes it bigger but not better; what was left out doesn't come back.
| Format | Size for 3 minutes | Plays on |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 192 kbps | about 4.3 MB | Everything |
| M4A 192 kbps | about 4.3 MB | iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows |
| OGG | about 4–5 MB | Android, Windows, Linux, browsers |
| FLAC | about 15–20 MB | Android, Windows, Mac, newer iPhones in Files |
| WAV | about 32 MB | Everything, and every audio editor |
